Moving forward on our 2nd Phase from our Taiwan Series. If you haven’t read yet our Taiwan travel snippets we highly suggest that you read that first then go back to this article.
Think Taipei is all about their lively night markets and their awesome Dim Sum places? Not really. If you are a serious foodie and normally prioritize the food culture next to none, then the Addiction Aquatic Development is the place to visit when in Taipei.
Addiction Aquatic Development is an enormous space that houses fresh seafood and aquamarine products, a large Japanese-style supermarket, and many themed restaurants and food kiosks under one roof. It is developed by Mitsui food and beverage enterprise group, who also owns several.
Sitting near the Songshan Airport, and what used to be the old Taipei Fish Market, it is now an upscale and classy market with Addiction Aquatic Development. It stands head and shoulders beyond other famous seafood markets in the world such as Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market, Seoul’s Noryangjin Fish Market, Sydney’s Fish Market, and Perth’s Fremantle Market.
The moment we entered the ADD, we were overwhelmed with the sights, sounds, and smell. The entire compound is separated into different areas. There are areas where diners can buy sushi to go and eat on the provided tables outside. There are areas where you pick the seafood or meat you want and have it cooked. And also areas where you can buy fruits and flowers.
To put things into context we’ll share with you each section and categories of what to expect during your visit and why you should visit this seafood mecca.
The Addiction Aquatic Development can be separated into several areas:
1. Live Seafood
2. Sushi Bar
5. Tapas Bar
6. Oyster Bar
7. Grilling Station
8. Hot Pot
Some may argue that there are 10 areas, but during our , isit we feel that there are really 8 general sections.
At the main entrance, you will be welcomed by the Live Aquamarine area.
The idea is to eliminate the middleman and to deal directly with consumers. With this, Addiction Aquatic Development is able to pass on the savings through providing reasonably priced live seafood from all over the world.
Expect a solid spread of fresh oysters, king crabs, lobsters, abalone, uni, scallops and much more.
Apart from seafood, you can also get imported and local fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat. Imported items from grains, cheese and other delectable items you find.
Roam around and pick what you want.
The Seafood Bar at Addiction Aquatic Development offers large varieties of fresh seafood. Eat your heart’s delight.
We ordered their fresh salmon and tuna sashimi for appetizers. The thick slices of fish were served on a bed of ice. This came with fresh wasabi. The servers teach you how to grind them and place a small amount on each of your plates. This combination of the fresh wasabi, soy sauce and fish is a happy bite that melts in your mouth.
Price Points: A Nigiri Sushi Set with salad, grilled items, and soup is priced between NT$580 to NT$980. A 9 piece Nigiri Sushi Combo is also inexpensive at NT$460. Check your currency exchange rates for a more accurate NT$-PHP or NT$-USD.
You may opt to have it to go as well. Fresh oysters, shrimps, scallops, and crabs. This is located just behind the sushi bar with limited seats.
Aside from your basic fresh produce of sushis and sashimis. You can get freshly cooked bento sets here, alongside several numbers of mains of the day.
In this visit, we opted to try the Hot Pot. Luckily, there was no line and we were able to get a table without a reservation.
Located upstairs. Seafood and vegetables cooked in a seaweed soup base hot pot. Varieties range from Hotpot with Sliced Pork (NT$480), Sliced Beef Short Ribs (NT$880), Mud Crab (NTS980) to a deluxe pot with seasonal seafood and sliced beef sirloin (NT$1680).
A seafood pot starts from NT$980/SET.
It is simple – you just order whatever you want from grill stalls, and your seafood will be grilled to order and served hot.
That absolute simplicity of fresh, flavorful seafood, complete with red wine and a touch of winter Taipei’s breezy weather- is one of the most essential exprience that you should partake during your visit.
Few pointers worth mentioning before you go:
- Cash only. No credit cards
- All areas except the hotpot section (reserve here: 886 2 2508 1268) are on a first-come, first, serve basis.
- 10 areas are independently operated. No bringing in of food from other areas into another section.
- Pets aren’t allowed (sorry, dog and cat parents)
- Opening Hours: 6:00am – 12:00am
So Yes, we can call Addictive Aquatic Development as Taipei’s answer to Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market.
Hope we’re able to provide you a snapshot of what to expect or better yet entice you to visit this wonderful seafood haven.
