Tragedy struck on January 12, 2020, when Taal volcano started spewing steam and ash from its crater raising the level 2 alert to level 4 where the volcano eruption was seemed as imminent. This ashfall reached as far as Quezon City and Caloocan area. This also caused numerous earthquakes and damage to infrastructure to Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna.

This calamity left thousands of families homeless, as well as, closure of all establishments in Tagaytay. Today, Discovery Hospitality Partners with Philippine Red Cross to help assist in relief efforts in Taal.

Five signature dishes, prepared by five exceptional chefs, and a silent auction showcasing the best of Discovery Hospitality Corporation (DHC) will converge in the evening of 21 March 2020, to raise funds for the relief efforts of Philippine Red Cross for the victims of Taal. With its sweeping views of the Makati skyline and impeccable cuisine and service, Flame Restaurant at Discovery Primea will serve as the venue for this special event.

Arancini Alla Bolognese by Chef Angelito Bagwan of Discovery Shore Boracay

Beef and tomato ragu, ParmigianoReggiano, EVOO paired with Borgo Sanleo Pinot Grigio, Italy 

This simple dish bursts in flavor the moment you put it in your mouth. The rich taste of the bolognese shines through when you bite into the crispy exterior of the Arancini which is complemented well by the fresh tangy tomato sauce and basil oil. A very good start for a good cause.

Thailand Green Curry by Chef Alex Atthasarn of Club Paradise 

Green Cury in Coconut Milk with eggplant and sweet basil paired with Katherine Hills Chardonnay 2016

The moment the soup was served it was so fragrant with the curry aroma wafting through the air. The aesthetic itself was beautiful as it was served on a bed of salt and various spices used to make curry. The taste of the soup itself was very light and has a kick of mild spice that you expect from a curry. The chicken itself was very tender and easy to consume.

Free-range egg, chorizo Macau, char-siu pork, homemade “bakkwa” and spiny rock lobster paired with Katherine Hills Chardonnay 2016, Australia

This is not your typical fried rice. One of the favorites at Flame, Chef Luis combines prime ingedients into this playful presentation that levels up your fried rice experience.

Tomahawk Steak by Chef Gerwin Bailon of Discovery Suites 

USDA Prime Angus bone-in ribeye, grilled vegetables with potato gratin served with 3 signature sauces paired with 770 Miles Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, California 

Chef Gerwin Bailon serves you 22 Primes specialty by giving you two slices of USDA Prime Angus ribeye with their 3 siganture sauces: Bearnaise, steak sauce, and peppercorn brandy gravy. This comes with a side of the potato gratin that is tender and just perfect with the truffle sauce that oozes in between the layers of the potato. The steak itself was served pink and was great with the peppercorn brandy sauce. The taste of the meat pairs well with the light Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ube Cheesecake by Chef Gerwin Bailon of Discovery Country Suites 

Graham crust, dessicated coconut, and yema sauce. 

The aesthetic itself symbolizes the reason why Discovery hospitality is having this event. The Ube Cheescake is shaped like a cone and they have this blue gin and apricot jelly that flows down like lava on a bed of yema. This is served with a side of cream, graham crumbs, and coconut. Try having a bit of everything in one bite so you can see the complexity of layers of flavors in this dish. It’s a perfect ending to this wonderful meal.

Enjoy this spread at PHP 3,500 nett per head that comes with a five course, five chef, food and wine pairing. This also includes participation in a silent auction to raise additional funds for this good cause.

For Discovery Primea, guests are given the chance to bid on an Overnight Accommodation in an Executive Suite with breakfast for two (starting bid of PHP 7,880++), or a Culinary Botany and Relaxation package comprising of Hammam treatment for two at Terazi Spa, followed by a Vegan Tasting Menu for two at Flame, and lastly, a multicourse tasting menu with wine pairing prepared by none other than Chef Luis Chikiamco at the hub in Flame.

 

Guests who want to experience the famous powder white sands of Boracay can do so with a stay at Discovery Shores Boracay up for auction. With a starting bid of PHP 56,950++, enjoy two nights of accommodations in a One Bedroom Suite, inclusive of breakfast for four persons, roundtrip transfers from and to Caticlan Airport, one-time boodle fight lunch or dinner for four, and five rounds of drinks per person per night, one pizza per night, and finally, an all-day Happy Hour at Sands Bar.

Lastly, up for bid is two nights of accommodation in a Garden Suite at Club Paradise Palawan, with a minimum bid of PHP 30,005++, inclusive of daily breakfast, full board meals (lunch and dinner) and roundtrip transfers for two persons.

 

Philippine Red Cross in Taal

The Taal Volcano eruption last 12 January 2020 has left thousands of families homeless.  The Philippine Red Cross since then has pitched 48 tents out of the planned 162 units for the tent city in Malainin, Ibaan Batangas.  Over 800 Philippine Red Cross personnel have been mobilized to assist in the Taal operations.

Aside from providing temporary shelters, major initiatives of Philippine Red Cross such as Disaster Management, Community Engagement and Accountability, Welfare Services, Health Services, Safety Services, as well as WASH (a program which promotes Hygiene and maintenance of water stations and portalets), are continuously implemented to ensure that the help extended go beyond relief distribution and help the community to get back on its feet.
