Hey Kids, let’s take a break from our typical “WHERE to EAT” series and let us veer towards the “WHAT to DO” aspect of our positioning. Our advocacy here in the Fat Girls Day Out platform is to promote well worth experiences may it be thru food, travel, and art. So today we will talk about ART again, more so in the form of films or movies. No, I am not going to discuss the latest Marvel’s Avengers install nor any typical Star Cinema- mistress led driven plots.
I want to re-introduce ten (10) films produced over the years that are still pretty interesting. Some may be called grotesque, too weird, and sometimes perhaps too biblical. Nevertheless, all these movies that I will share below will have one common factor- It will EVOKE you as an audience.
If you’ve been following our platform from the start of this year, we’re gearing towards curating dynamic type of list. So to kick of Q2018, we are launching the quarterly Fat Girls Day Out Curated Films Ed. for you to binge on.
1) Tokyo Godfathers (2003) dir. Satoshi Kon
An alcoholic, a trans woman & former drag queen, and a runaway girl try to return an abandoned newborn to her parents. A heartwarming story to watch. Great color grading by Satoshi Kon.
2) Lady Vengeance (2005) dir. Park Chan-Wook
A woman seeks revenge for being imprisoned for a crime she did not commit The 3rd installment in The Vengeance Trilogy (with Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance). It is an amazingly brutal movie.
3) The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
A surgeon secretly befriends a boy who has ties to his past as his family begins to fall ill. This film perfectly portrays the clash of the modern and the mystic/unexplained. The “Yorgos” robotic eerie dialogues will never fail to creep the f** you out.
4) The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) dir. Wes Anderson
Well for one, it is a Wes Anderson film. The story revolves around an absentee father tries to reconnect with his three children who achieved so much when they were young only to fail when they reach the peak of their adulthood. Quirky portrayals of characters and Anderson’s color grading never fails.
5) Annihilation (2017) dir. Alex Garland
The plot revolves around a group of women who were sent to investigate a mysterious phenomenon only known as The Shimmer. The film will superimpose questions regarding our human psyche. Solid plot, unnerving ending scene. Also, it’s on Netflix. You’re welcome.
6) Mother! (2017) dir. Darren Aronofsky
If you like biblical allegories then this film is definitely for you. Tells a story about a wife and her husband’s peaceful life in their country home is disturbed by the arrival of unusual visitors. Interesting story progressions with lots of layers which will lead to confusion towards the middle part of the film yet the ending will tie the whole plot so perfectly and sweet.
7) Koto no ha no Niwa / The Garden of Words (2013) dir. Makoto Shinkai
An interesting narrative about a student and a mysterious woman with an unlikely connection. The film is complemented by a beautiful musical scoring and an art that will evoke emotions that’ll make you want to cry. Available on Netflix.
8) The Lure (2015) dir. Agnieszka Smoczynska
First, it is a Polish horror musical (the songs are great though!). The plot revolves around two mermaid sisters join a new wave band – one falls in love with a man and like with most love stories, tragedy ensues.
9) Assassination (2015) dir. Choi Dong-Hoon
Set during the Japanese occupation of Korea in 191. A group of resistance members is assembled to assassinate a high-ranking Japanese official and a Korean sympathizer. Strong female lead and a gripping solid plot.
10) The Shape of Water (2017) dir. Guillermo del Toro
The story of a mute girl who works as a cleaner for a top-secret laboratory who falls in love with a humanoid amphibian creature. Forget your Disney’s Beauty & the Beast as fairy tales don’t get any weirder yet better than this film. Awesome musical scoring and also the Fish Man + Woman= Sex?
