Oy! Croqueta: Bite Size Meal Bombs

Croquetas is one of the more popular tapas from Spain. These creamy fritters are a staple of the Spanish tapas scene, and you’ll find them all around the country. Luckily, you don’t need to travel to Spain to get a taste of the real thing. Traditionally made with Béchamel, the boys of Oy! takes your typical expectation of this nifty snack and turns it upside down.

Brought to you by Xavi Rovira, Julen Aierdi, and Jonas Pons. They have combined this authentic Spanish treat with Filipino flavors. The merging of these two cuisines is so evident that you won’t know where the Spanish start and where the Filipino ends.

Ironically, the theme of the kiosk and their packing of Oy! is a ship, just like how the Spaniards came to the Philippines a long time ago. It’s a nice symbolism of how our two cultures first met. But this time, they capture our hearts instead.

To fully appreciate, this is how you should eat it:
Chorizo -> Valenciana -> Adobong Pusit -> Lechon

To find out how the original tastes like try the Chorizo Croqueta first. The Béchamel sauce just coats your mouth with the pleasure of the rich taste and salty chorizo. Their other flavors use rice, instead of the traditional Béchamel, to highlight their love of the Philippines and they’re adapting to a rice culture. The Valenciana sits in the middle, being a Spanish dish while still using rice as the base.

Our personal favorite is the Adobong Pusit, the adobo and squid flavor burst out as you bite into it. It’s just like eating it on a plate in a much crispier package.

The last one you must try is their Lechon flavor, the middle has a meaty piece and the rice that surrounds it is tasty just like lechon sauce. A nice twist on these classic Spanish and Filipino dishes.

For their sweet treats, they offer matcha, peanut butter, and Nutella. Each bite addicting in its own right, as it burst into your mouth.

The boys of Oy! was truly able to combine these two cuisines together into a tapa that everyone can relate to. You start out with something authentic and Spanish and end with something entirely Filipino. Visit the Oy! Croqueta kiosk in SM Mall of Asia, and experience it yourself.

Special props to the Oy! Croqueta boys for sharing their passion to introduce this concept and marrying two culture influences and to Jayvee Ardona for organizing the event.
