The Good Stuff Over at Chili’s
To all Filipinos, homegrown can mean different things, it’s the kind of dishes that you grow up with, the dishes your lola(grandmother) or lolo(grandfather) makes. This type of meal is heavily influenced by both your parents’ culinary heritage, and here at Gabe’s there is an influence of Malabon cuisine.
When Dan invited us for a meal, we were very excited to finally have a taste of what they serve at Gabe’s Homegrown Dishes. Aside from their famous “horsilog” (horse tapa/fried egg/garlic rice), we wanted to try their home dishes.
Upon entering their humble establishment, you notice the vast array of memorabilia, comic books from local and foreign artists, classic board games, figurines, and the decorated wall full of praises for Gabe’s. This homey interior makes you want to take a seat, order a drink and start playing games.
For Starters, we were served a multitude of classic Filipino street food, and homemade snacks usually available in every Filipino household.
Various Filipino Street Foods: fish balls(50 PHP), squid balls(60 PHP), and kwek kwek(5 pcs-45PHP, 10 pcs-90 PHP) As with this dish, it’s only as good as the sauce. They have 2 selections, the classic vinegar with cucumber and their brown sauce. The vinegar sauce was good but would do even better with a hit of chili. Their brown sauce has a hint of barbecue and is a good dipping sauce for there favorite street snacks.
Their Calamares(180 PHP) had a crunchy exterior with a thin squid piece in each bite. We would have wanted the squid to be a bit thicker but it was still good. What was surprising for us was the sauce, a mix of typical mayo and ketchup mix but with shaved raw garlic on top. It adds a bite to the overall taste of the dish.
When we saw the Cheese Sticks(80 PHP) being served, it instantly reminded us of how our mom made it at home. It was crispy with a generous amount of melted cheese on the inside. This for us was just like home.
The Fried Lumpia(100PHP) was your classic homemade lumpia, best enjoyed with the vinegar dip with chili.
For the main meal, we were served a multitude of classic Malabon and Pampanga inspired dishes from where Gabe’s parent are from.
The Crunchy Pork Sisig ni Gabe(185 PHP) is one the best seller of Gabe’s and for good reason, it had a big serving size, it was tasty and crunchy. The same elements of what we like for Sisig. Add some chili for some heat.
Tinumis(90 PHP), is the Malabon version of Dinuguan.
Their Kare Kare(250 PHP) is huge and is perfect for sharing. What we noticed was that they use uncommon vegetables such as horseradish and cabbage instead of the usual vegetables associated with this dish, must be a Malabon influence.
Another dish for sharing is their Lengua(280 PHP), the soft pieces of ox tongue was bathed in a creamy sauce. This dish was good, but we found it a bit too sweet for our taste.
Here at Gabe’s, you can have your selection of classic Filipino breakfast meals in Tapsilog, Tosilog and their specialty the Horsilog(140PHP). According to Dan, horse meat is a delicacy in Malabon and that this dish has been one of their bestsellers since they started Gabe’s in 2015.
The Horse Tapa is served with a fried egg, and cup of garlic rice. At first look, the horse tapa looked like beef and smelled like beef. The moment you put it in your mouth a sweet strong and pungent flavor emerges, it’s familiar and strange, at the same time, but not far from how beef tapa tastes like.
If we did not know this was horse, we probably would have thought it was just the normal beef that usually comes with this dish.
Our favorite dish was the Valencia ala Malabon (105 PHP with ice cream), the deep fried fritters filled with ube(purple yam), leche flan, langka(jackfruit), and saba was topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
After a delicious meal at Gabe’s we spent the next hour admiring their and browsing thru their different comic books, and various game selections. This hidden spot is definitely worth visiting when you want a nice homey meal and a great place to hang out with friends and family.
