For most of us, Christmas is a special holiday. It is the one holiday of the year that us Filipinos, “go all out”. Personally, my favorite food holiday is Thanksgiving( I love turkey, pecan pie, cranberry sauce, and sweet potato mash), Christmas is a close second. For this special Holiday post I’d like to share with everyone my family’s staple Holiday favorites, that could also be on your traditional Christmas celebration.
1. Hizon’s Ensaymada
This is a family staple that we always have on Christmas. It is my favorite brand of Ensaymada. It is soft pastry, light and airy, that the bread almost melts in your mouth, topped with the sugar and shredded queso de bola.
Insider tip: It’s even better when you toast it.
Price: PHP 105

2. Kunanan’s Ensaymada
This is my mom’s family favorite. Every Christmas we would have this for Noche Buena. Another succesful take on the classic ensaymada, also topped with queso de bola.
Insider Tip: Also good when toasted.

3. Dayrit’s Porkloin Ham
I’m not really fan of the sweet ham with the traditional sweet glaze and pineapple but my mom received this as a gift and I got hooked. It’s slightly sweet and savory. Slicing thick cuts of the ham, and then slightly frying, and topping it on piping hot rice is probably a sin but a sin that im willing to take.(This is really amazing!!)
Price: PHP 1,350

4. Majestic Ham
In contrast to Dayrit’s we have Majestic Ham. This ham can be found in most supermarkets and can be quite expensive and it has been a staple in my family for years. The salty meat and the little fat trimmings can take your normal ham sandwich to the next level.
Insider tip: Add a little fat to go with the ham when making sandwiches, it elevates the flavor of the ham.
Price: 1kg – PHP 1,375
*Can be located at most supermarkets.
Since I was a kid, we would always have Elar’s Lechon for lunch on Christmas Day. The vibrant smell of the pig, the crispy red skin, and the soft succulent meat, could not be more enticing as it is. I can’t help but grab a piece of juicy ‘balat’, as they are chopping up the pig. That is even more enhanced when you add their liver sauce. Christmas or any other family holiday would not be complete without this.
Price: 15 kg – PHP 6,000 (good for 15-20 pax)
Christmas is more than just another holiday, it symbolizes time for our family and friends. Sharing a meal with our loved ones during Christmas and preparing food for them is one of the simplest way to say “I love you and thank you for being in my our life.” Let’s share the love!
