Where to To Take Your Mom This Mother’s Day

A few days left before May 13th (Sunday)! Where will you celebrate Mother’s Day? A few may say that mandatory celebration like is just a big marketing hoax to get you to spend and be lured in as a consumer. Well, partly YES. Same with Valentine’s day right? or any life celebrations for that matter. We, Pinoys are sappy sentimental like that and we are more empathetic, celebratory, and sentimental by culture. We grew up that way and we shouldn’t feel sorry for it. Besides, Mother’s Day is a day for many people to show their appreciation towards mothers.

Most don’t have any clue just yet where to take our precious mommies so we the Fat Girls Day Out crew listed our top 10  recommendations on where to take our Nanay this coming Sunday!

10 restaurants + 1 bonus cake shop. 4-6 recommended menu items. 4 different price points.

Chef Florabel’s mission is to make fine dining as non-intimidating and within the greater public’s reach. She’s known for her ingenuity and brilliant infusion of the best local produced and making something world class.  Felix is one of the 9 concept restaurants on Yatco’s roster and can probably be the best representation of her vision. The restaurant was named after Chef Florabel Co-Yatco’s dad, Felix. Opened last April 2008 serving Asian Continental food and is one of the pioneering restaurants in Greenbelt 5.

La Mère Poulard in Manila is the fourth branch of the renowned French restaurant. The original restaurant still sits in Mont Saint-Michel, while the two other branches can be found in Japan. There are only 4 La Mère Poulard in the whole world and that includes their venture here in the Philippines.

Fat Girls Day Out- Mother's Day

The restaurant was founded by Anne “Annette” Boutiaut (1851-1931), who married Victor Poulard on 14 January 1873 and founded the Hostellerie de la Tête d’Or, after finding that customers came and went quickly, gave them the idea of cooking giant omelettes in a wooden hearth in a certain way made these eggs puffy and frothy . This technique made it feel that the eggs were more like a souffle rather than an omelet in the mouth. This, along with a number of other recipes she had crafted, gained her the French honorary title “Mère” or “Mother,” which is only granted to excellent cooks. This was the beginning of La Mère Poulard’s worldwide reputation for its hospitality and well-executed dishes.

Type of Mom

For those who love perfection in layers and texture. Simple, elegant, and delicious.

Toyo opened its doors last March 2016 to rave reviews and is located at The Alley, a compound at Karrivin Plaza along Chino Roces. Chef Jordy Navarra’s clean technique was helmed both by his innate passion, talent and at the same time a true reflective work coming from his previous experiences at The Fat Duck in the UK and Bo Innovation in Hong Kong.

Toyo’s philosophy revolves around taking basic elements of Filipino flavor presenting it in a subtle way that strips basic elements to highlight the true essence of it.

They cook using wood and charcoal. Open fire, but in essence, keep the flavors clean that will lead to simplicity and easy to understand food. Toyo’s offerings are best enjoyed through its tasting menus (P2,900 +++ per person) or its three-course set menu (P1,000 per person). A handful of dishes are available in à la carte. We decided to try first the 3-course meal for our first visit.

Type of Mom

Chic, adventurous, and willing to diversify her food selections. One must also enjoy a good aperitif while waiting for dinner!

Take your palette to the Basque region of Spain and head over to Tapella Bar and Restaurant. It’s a modern Spanish restaurant nestled within the confines of Greenbelt 5. Tapella spearheads their food with influences from the Basque region while also taking influences from nearby neighboring countries.

Ingredients are sourced from Spain, Morocco, and locally where they are able to bring these parts together and bring life to Tapella. Adorned with modern furnishing and hues of light and dark. They have an air-conditioned and al fresco dining options. One thing that we love Tapella is on how they meticulously curate and source their core ingredients such as the locally made chorizo that they use in their dishes
